In this bustling world of constant interruptions, outdoor adventures are a great way to ease tension and relax from your daily grind. Getting out in nature on a regular basis is proven to be therapeutic for all individuals, especially those with special needs, as a way to promote mental health. For many troubled adolescents, it is also an excellent way to experience personal growth, self-discovery, improve self-esteem, and self-confidence.
Spirit-bay Empowering Adventures would like to invite you to enjoy a day in the scenic outdoors of the Texas Coastal Bend where the sites and sounds of the surf, the smell of the salty air, and the warmth of a gentle breeze touching your skin can provide a relaxing and therapeutic experience.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) “Any Mental Illness (AMI) Among U.S. Adults.” U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2015) mental illness is common in the United States. In 2015, there were an estimated 43.4 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with (AMI) within the past year. This number represented 17.9% of all U.S. Adults. The NIMH also shows that approximately 13% of children ages 8 to 15 had a diagnosable mental disorder within the previous year.
According to Pearson, David G., and Tony Craig. “The Great Outdoors? Exploring the Mental Health Benefits of Natural Environments.” Frontiers in Psychology 5 (2014): 1178. PMC. Web. 22 Aug. 2017 the benefits of outdoor activities and exploration include the following:
- Being close to natural environments has been associated with lower levels of stress and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.
- Interacting with nature can improve cognition for children with attention deficits and individuals with depression.
- Evidence indicates that mental health benefits are associated with the “restorative” properties of natural environments.
If you are one of the many individuals with special needs it may be difficult to find the support and safe environment. The challenges you face in everyday life can be taxing and often make issues worse.
